How to Give Yourself a Subcutaneous Injection: A Step-by-Step Guide from Livly Wellness

Self-administering subcutaneous injections can seem daunting at first, but with the right knowledge and practice, it becomes a manageable and routine task. At Livly Wellness in St. Paul, Minnesota, we believe in empowering our patients with the skills they need for effective self-care. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you confidently give yourself a subcutaneous injection.

1. Prepare Your Supplies

Before starting, gather all the necessary supplies:

  • Medication: Make sure you have the correct medication as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Syringe and Needle: Use a new, sterile syringe and needle for each injection.
  • Alcohol Swabs: For disinfecting the injection site.
  • Sharps Container: For safe disposal of used needles and syringes.

2. Wash Your Hands

Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. Clean hands reduce the risk of infection and ensure a sterile procedure.

3. Prepare the Medication

  • Check the Medication: Verify the medication and dosage with your healthcare provider’s instructions.
  • Draw the Medication: If using a vial, clean the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab. Insert the needle into the vial, draw the required amount of medication, and then remove any air bubbles by tapping the syringe and pushing the plunger slightly.

4. Choose and Clean the Injection Site

  • Select the Site: Common areas for subcutaneous injections include the abdomen, outer thigh, or upper arm. Rotate sites to prevent tissue damage.
  • Clean the Site: Use an alcohol swab to clean the chosen injection site in a circular motion. Allow it to air dry before proceeding.

5. Administer the Injection

  • Pinch the Skin: Gently pinch a fold of skin at the injection site to lift it away from underlying muscles.
  • Insert the Needle: Hold the syringe like a dart and insert the needle at a 45 to 90-degree angle, depending on your body fat and needle length.
  • Inject the Medication: Slowly push the plunger to release the medication into the subcutaneous tissue.

6. Withdraw the Needle and Dispose Properly

  • Remove the Needle: After injecting the medication, withdraw the needle at the same angle it was inserted.
  • Apply Pressure: Use a clean cotton ball or gauze to apply gentle pressure at the injection site. You may also apply a bandage if needed.
  • Dispose of the Needle: Place the used needle and syringe in a designated sharps container. Never throw them in the regular trash.

7. Clean Up

Wash your hands again after disposing of the used supplies. Ensure your workspace is clean and organized.

8. Follow-Up

Monitor the injection site for any unusual reactions, such as redness, swelling, or pain. If you experience any adverse effects or have concerns, contact Livly Wellness at 612-662-5531 or visit our website at www.livlywellness.com for support.
